Hello to our athletes, friends and supporters of the Vermont Senior Games. There are a lot of changes that have occurred in a very short time period this year, and I’d like to share that information with you. The VSGA Board has elected our 2017 officers and they are: Marti Powers-President, Janet Nunziata-Vice President, Diana Wood-Secretary (and Newsletter editor), and John Scheer-Treasurer. Betsy Terry stepped down as Secretary to help Barbara Jordan and together they are co-chairing the Games Committee and the overall events, and making sure all the athletes have an extraordinary experience.
VSGA is growing and we decided to hire our first Managing Director. Her name is Andrea Stander and she calls Montpelier her home. Andrea comes with a wealth of knowledge from her time working with non-profits and brings her marketing/fundraising talent to help us. You will see Andrea at nearly every event so I encourage you to make it a point to talk with her. We also have a new Board Member – Alan Rubel from Barre. Alan has expertise in marketing and promotions and we are happy to have him join the VSGA team. Click on the “About Us” tab on the VSGA Website to see a list of Board Members and their bios.
We made a decision to continue to focus on the quality of our games with a limited staff, so in 2017 we are only holding games that are supported by the National Senior Games Association. Those games include Basketball, Bowling, Cycling, Golf, Horseshoes, Pickleball, Racquetball, Road Races 5K and 10K, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track and Field, and Triathlon. This list of games is only for 2017 and may be expanded in the future. We are looking forward to supporting our athletes who will attend the National Games in Birmingham, Alabama so more to come on that.
Our highest priority is to continue providing high quality games which allow for increased competition and plenty of fun, fitness and fellowship! I want to thank those volunteers who have stepped up to be our Sports Coordinators – we could not hold these events without their dedication and support. We are also developing a “partnership” on some sports with other organizations who conduct sporting events. These partnerships will enable us to take advantage of a larger pool of competitors and provide a better overall experience for our more complex events. Our 2017 partner sports are: Road Races 5K and 10K, Swimming and the Triathlon.
VSGA now has a volunteer Webmaster – Matt Guild from Bellows Falls. We are in the process of updating our website to include all of the detailed information for the 2017 games. Please check from time to time to see if your favorite sport has new information available. Matt is going to the National Games in Birmingham so we will get some live updates from that event posted on Facebook.
One last comment – I have a personal goal of working to establish a “community” of people in support of Vermont Senior Games. As you know, a community is made up of different levels of participation as we see in our own towns and cities. A VSGA community consists of the VSGA Board, athletes themselves, sport volunteers, people who are interested in watching sports live, and those who want to spend a some time supporting older people as they pursue their own fitness goals (I call these people the cheering section). Let’s not forget that fun, fitness, and fellowship are the cornerstones of the VSGA Community and you will find plenty of this at our events.
If you have any comments or suggestions throughout this games season, please let me know. I have an open-door policy and believe that listening to our athletes and supporters is the only way to continue to build a vibrant and relevant program into the future.
SEE YOU AT THE GAMES!
Marti Powers, President
